• Welcome to Miss. Liloia's 1st Grade!
First grade is such an amazing time! We are learning so much every day! Don't forget that school is closed for Spring Break beginning on Friday, April 19 and will reopen Monday, April 29.
STEM Fridays continue, with great work happening. Students are developing problem solving skills and working together with great results! Look for some Spring themed STEM coming up!
We are continually adding strategies to our reading tool boxes. As our reading levels climb, the words get trickier and trickier. Our fabulous firsties are constantly working to solve these tricky words by asking themselves: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? We are beginning to dive deeper into the characters in our books, asking ourselves what they do and how they feel. Understanding the character helps us understand the problem in the story and how it is resolved. Students are coming home with baggie books at their "just right" reading level.
Please make sure they are practicing these books each night.
We are beginning my FAVORITE writing unit, opinion writing. First graders have strong opinions and there is no better way to improve our writing than to voice those opinions. We will begin the unit writing about our own collections. Students will bring in a small collection from home (no more than 5 items) and write about which is their favorite and

In Math, we are continuing to develop problem solving strategies. We are learning how to use new tools, such as 120 chart and open number lines. We will study place value, specifically tens and ones. This will help us when we start adding two digit numbers, with and without regrouping.

Our focus with shift from Social Studies to Science in the upcoming marking period. We will look at the Earth and Sky, followed by Weather and Seasons. Students will become fascinated with stars and the moon. They will come home with some fun songs about the moon, the stars, and the seasons!

As always, we love ending our week with yoga.  It is such a relaxing way to spend Friday afternoons.  Sit with your child and have them show you how to do their poses.  They have become so great at some of the complex yoga poses they have learned!

Please be sure to check your child's blue folder nightly. Homework and future assignment/test dates will be posted daily on my Homework page. Your child's blue folder will contain all homework and any notices that need to go home. Students will have their behavior calendar in their blue folder every day. Please review the calendar nightly and discuss your child's day.Your child should complete 10-15 minutes of reading each night from any book of their choosing.
Make sure your child reads nightly. It is very important to do this so your child can improve in all of his or her academic areas.
