• Welcome To Mrs. Dunaj's  1st Grade!
    Happy New Year!

First graders finished 2018 with some extraordinary work! We celebrated Winter Break with Gingerbread Week.  There are some great gingerbread stories out there, and we even had a gingerbread friend join our class! He got lost one day and we had to go on a Scavenger Hunt to find him!
We have become nonfiction experts, and are using some amazing strategies to solve tricky words. In January, we will begin to use what we know about nonfiction text to begin writing our own nonfiction chapter books! Wait until you see what your experts write about! Coming soon we will begin to dive deeper into books to focus on comprehension strategies.

In Math, we are continuing to develop problem solving strategies fcusing on subtraction facts through 20. We are learning to subtract by counting back and counting on a number line, as well as using ten frames for subtraction. We will focus on fact families, or addition and subtraction facts that go hand in hand.  Your little math-magicians can tell you exactly what that means.

We finished learning about light and what makes shadows. Students learned the difference between transparent, translucent, and opaque. We will begin learning about school and community resources in Social Studies.

We chose some amazing New Year's Resolutions.  You should have some great helpers at home, as they said they will help with cooking and cleaning. As always, we love ending our week with yoga.  Ask your child to show you the Warrior Pose!

We have a daily snack in our classroom. Please remember to send in a small, healthy snack each day.
Our Specials Schedule is as follows:

    Tuesday: Art

**Recess will be held daily.  Please be sure to wear or bring sneakers.
In addition to information about homework,  my website will provide details of upcoming events, long term assignments, class rules, and overall expectations in first grade.  I hope you find the information useful.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  All emails and phone calls will be returned within 24 hours.
    Thanks so much!
